Terminology Definitions ~ Article 3

  1. Breeding Association
    A governmentally acknowledged breeding association according to article of the Law of Animal Breeding directly or indirectly associated with the FN (Federation Nationale) as a member organization.
  2. Breeding Horse
    A horse,
    • the parents and grandparents of which are entered or mentioned in a studbook of the same breed and which may acquire an entry into the same (purebred breeding horse), or
    • which is entered in the studbook of an acknowledged breeders association (entered breeding horse).
  3. Breeding Value
    The considerable influence of horses on the performance and the exterior of their descendants. The total breeding value of a horse is determined from an age of three years.
  4. Performance Test
    A method for determining the performance of horses within the scope of the determination of the breeding value.
  5. Studbook
    A book of breeding horses kept by an acknowledged breeder association for providing an identification of the former as well as proof of their descent and their performance.
  6. Age of the Horse
    For the determination of the age, January 1 of the following year is the valid date for horses born in November and December, for all other horses, January 1 of the year of birth is the relevant date for the allocation to an age-group.
  7. Allocation of Licenses
    The allocation of a license is the decision of the breeding association on the general preliminary use of a stallion within the scope of the respective breeding program. The decision is, in particular, based on the outer appearance as well as the predisposition with respect to performance, as far as it is evident from the available information.
  8. Studbook Entry
    The decision of the respective breeding association on the entry of a horse into a section of the studbook is effected upon application in accordance with the criteria laid down in the studbook regulations.
  9. Breeding Program
    The breeding program is the sum of the activities carried out for achieving a progress in breeding. In the breeding program, specification concerning
    • the breeding
    • the breeding methods
    • the performance tests
    • the selection criteria
    • the scope of the breeding population

    are required.

  10. Horse ID
    The horse ID serves as a document for identification of entered horses.
  11. Breeder
    The breeder of a horse is the owner of the mother at the time of the coverage.
    A member of a breeders' association who owns at least one breeding animal is referred to as a breeder.
