Breeding Regulations

Identification ~ Article 23

The identification of horses by the Canadian Oberlander Horse Association is effected with the aid of the following methods:

  1. Specification of the sex, description of color and markings
  2. Allocation of a registration number
Each horse receives a registration number at the latest upon entry into a studbook; foals receive their registration number upon registration of their birth. The registration number is conform to ISO.
This number is not subject to changes and is also maintained upon a transfer of the horse to another studbook.
  3. Allocation of a name upon the entry into the studbook
The name allocated upon the entry into the studbook is to be maintained. In certain cases a new name may be entered with the permission of the breeding association, if the original name is always indicated in brackets behind the new name during the complete duration of the horse's life in publications as well as on the account of descent. Names including the name of a breeding place may, as a rule, changes of this combination are not permissible. The first letter of the name of a female breeding animal is identical to the first letter of the name of its mother, the first letter of the name of a male breeding animal is identical to the first letter of the name of its sire.

The breeding name of each licensed stallion has to be admitted by the stock department of the FN via the responsible breeding association. A direct agreement between stallion owners and the stock department of the FN is not permissible.

A name is only considered as allocated when it is acknowledged by the stock department and the stallion has been entered into the stallion data base of the FN under this name.

The Canadian Oberlander Horse Association applies for the names in written, under citation of at least the registration number as well as the sire and the mother. Besides, the provisions of the regulations on breeding associations of the FN are to be applied.

    Provisions on Exceptions

    a. Names of thoroughbred stallions, trotters as well as of stallions reared abroad which are already registered in the studbooks of the association of their origin are, as a rule maintained.

    b. A name once allocated to a stallion is to be used for full brothers of this stallion with the corresponding affix II, etc.

  4. Regulations, Active Marking, Branding of Foals
Prerequisites for the allocation of a brand:
Thigh brands including a number brand are, as a rule, only given out in the year of the birth. The brand is placed on the left thigh by the commissioners of the association after the foal has been inspected with respect to the description of color and markings before having been taken away from its mother. Foals for which only a birth certificate has been issued will only receive the number brand.

    Thigh Brand
Foals can only receive a thigh brand when they satisfy the prerequisites with respect to descent as well as all other conditions for the issuance of an account of descent. It consists of the breed symbol of the association.

    Active Marking
All foals receive a brand of three digits on the left thigh. This number consists of the fifth, sixth and seventh digit of the registration number.
The brand can be replaced by acknowledged methods for active marking.

  5. For the active marking and the assurance of identity the association can make us of the association of horse breeders.
